Biography and research interests

André Jansson is Professor of Media and Communication Studies at Karlstad University, Sweden. He currently leads two research projects; Rural Networking/Networking the Rural (FORMAS) and Secure Spaces: Media, Consumption and Social Surveillance (Riksbankens Jubileumsfond). He has published several books and articles in the field of media and cultural studies, with a special focus on communication geography. Among his publications in English are the co-edited books:

  • Online Territories: Globalization, Mediated Practice and Social Space (forthcoming)
  • Strange Spaces: Explorations into Mediated Obscurity (2009)
  • Geographies of Communication: The Spatial Turn in Media Studies (2006)


Running the research project SECURE SPACES: MEDIA, CONSUMPTION and SOCIAL SURVEILLANCE (2009-2011) together with Miyase Christensen. The project investigates the socio-cultural significance of mediated surveillance in everyday life, combining qualitative and quantitative interview data from various Swedish contexts.
