Biography and research interests

Dr. Michael Nagenborg studied philosophy, literature studies and history of art at the University of Karlsruhe. His doctoral thesis was on “Privacy in Context of Information and Communication Technology”. He has been a member of the European research project “ETHICBOTS - Emerging Technoethics of Human Interaction with Communication, Bionic and Robotic Systems”. Since 2007 he is a member of the research staff of the Interdepartmental Centre for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities (IZEW) in Tübingen.

His research topics include (intercultural) information and media ethics (privacy / surveillance, video games), philosophy of technology (security technologies), philosophy of medicine, and philosophy of (sub-)culture.


Research Networks and Activity:

  • International Center for Information Ethics - The ICIE is an academic plattform for Information Ethics, which includes discussions on surveillance.
  • ETICA - Ethical Issues of Emerging ICT Applications - The main aim of the ETICA research project is to identify ethical issues arising from information and communication technologies in the coming 10 to 15 years.
  • THEBEN, Terahertz-Detektionssysteme: Ethische Begleitung, Evaluation und Normenfindung - The THEBEN-Project addresses the questions of „security ethics“ in the specific context of researching, developing and implementing security technologies, especially terahertz detectors.
