Biography and research interests

Miyase Christensen obtained her Ph.D. in 2003, at the University of Texas at Austin. Christensen’s international research experience is embedded in multidisciplinary knowledge and training, and her primary research areas include social theory and the media (in relation to communicative practice, social space and transnationalization processes); social surveillance; European media and information society systems/policies; and politics of popular communication. She is the author and editor of a number of current and forthcoming books and numerous international articles. Christensen is the incoming Chair of the Race and Ethnicity in Communication Division of ICA (International Communication Association), and member of a number of international networks and projects that explore sociocultural aspects of media use.

Christensen’s current research includes two funded three-year projects

 

  • “Secure Spaces: Media, Consumption and Social Surveillance” (with A. Jansson), funded by the Swedish National Bank. The project investigates the socio-cultural significance of mediated surveillance in everyday life, combining qualitative and quantitative interview data from various Swedish contexts“.
  • Models, Media, and Arctic Climate Change: Understanding the Interface between Sustainability Policies and Modeling of Climate and Ecosystems” (with Sverker Sorlin et al), funded by FORMAS
