Chiara Fonio holds a PhD in Sociology and Methodology of the Social Research. Her main research areas are surveillance studies, security and terrorism, ICTs. As part of her doctoral thesis, she carried out the first Italian qualitative research focused on CCTV in the city of Milan. The book Videosorveglianza, uno sguardo senza volto (Video surveillance. A faceless gaze) originated from her thesis and was released in February 2007. After her empirical research the local municipality of Milan asked her to teach either social aspects or privacy implications of CCTV to the operators.
Currently, she is senior researcher of ITSTIME (Italian Team for Security, Terroristic Issue and Managing Emergencies). ITSTIME is based at the UniversitÓ Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Milan, Italy), Department os Sociology. She is teaching assistant in Sociology and Mass Communication theory since 2005.
