Biography and research interests

Pete Fussey’s main research interests focus on surveillance and security with particular reference to counter-terrorism and, also, major events. He has also published widely on CCTV in the UK. Dr Fussey co-developed England’s first MSc in Terrorism Studies and published on relationships between surveillance strategies and terrorist decision-making and the use of surveillance for counter-terrorism in London between 1992-2010. He works on large-scale funded research projects examining counter-terrorism in the UK’s crowded spaces (i.e. EPSRC EP/HO230LX/1, £1.2m). Other ongoing work examines mega-event security and surveillance strategies, particularly the London 2012 Olympics. This has yielded two books (Fussey et al. (2010 in press) “Securing and Sustaining the Olympic City” (Ashgate); Richards, Fussey and Silke (eds) (2010 in press) “Terrorism and the Olympics” (Routledge)), several journal articles and book chapters. Other research examines resilience, particularly ‘third generation resilience’, issues. Most recently, this is articulated through a large-scale ESRC/EPSRC project ‘Resilient Futures’ (EP/I005943/1, £1.7m) examining resilience and UK CNI until 2050. He also researches organised crime in London. This includes ethnographic examination of irregular migrants’ operation within East London’s informal and organised crime networks. Finally, he also researches the trafficking of children for criminal exploitation and the establishment of victim-focussed child-protection policing models.
