Helena Machado is Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Department of Sociology, University of Minho. She is Full Researcher at the Research Centre for the Social Sciences of the University of Minho and Associate Researcher at the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra.
Her research interests are set on the area of the sociology of forensic genetics (with special focus on the issues of biocitizenship; identity, social identification and classification and informed consent on the donation of biological material); on the relationships between justice, media and citizenship (particularly on the impacts of social representations about social order drawn by the mediatisation of judicial cases) and social studies of gender. She has coordinated several scientific research projects with the support of the Foundation for Science and Technology and has authored and co-authored several national and international publications.
Research Networks and Activity:
Helena Machado is the coordinador of the project entitled Forensic DNA databasing in Portugal - contemporary issues in ethics, practices and policy, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology.
