Dr Katja Šugman Stubbs is Professor of criminal law at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, Researcher at the Ljubljana Institute of Criminology, and President of the Slovenian Association of Criminal law and Criminology. Professor Šugman Stubbs holds degrees in law and in psychology. Her fields of interest are criminal procedure, evidence law, EU criminal law and psychology and law. She has written extensively on the rights of defendants, exclusionary rules, the balance between liberty and security in EU criminal law, the European Arrest Warrant and psychological factors influencing judicial decisions.
Her recent research includes: a proposal for a new model for Slovenian criminal procedure, comparative studies on the principle of mutual recognition, analysis of general criminal law principles and their weeknesses in the crimininal law of the EU, and studies in psychological mechanisms contributing to discrimination in criminal justice. She was a visiting Fellow at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge (2004-2005) and Visiting Researcher at the Institute de sciences criminelles, Faculty of Law, Poitiers (2009).
