Biography and research interests

Rosamunde van Brakel has studied at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and University of Ottawa and obtained degrees in both educational sciences and criminology. She has been a visiting researcher at the Surveillance Studies Centre at Queens University in Canada and is part of the EU COST-LISS project and the Surveillance Studies Network.

Since 2006 she has been doing doctoral research on pre-emptive surveillance of children at the Centre for Criminological Research at the University of Sheffield, which will continu at the research group Law, Science, Technology and Society Studies (LSTS) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel from March 2011 in the context of the FP7 SIAM project. The doctoral research focuses on the social, ethical and legal issues involved in the implementation of pre-emptive surveillance technologies in the context of crime prevention.

She is also part of the programming committee of the annual Computers, Privacy and Data Protection Conference, which is co-organised by LSTS and has recently co-authored an article in the international interdisciplinary journal Surveillance & Society, on Understanding resistance to digital surveillance: Towards a multi-disciplinary, multi-actor framework (2009).

Research interests: surveillance studies, sociology of crime control, technology and policing, childrens rights, history of normality and deviance, philosophy of technology, science and technology studies.
