Biography and research interests

Kush Wadhwa is the founder and managing director of Global Security Intelligence, a London based research consultancy.  His work focuses upon providing independent, non-partisan advisory services in strategic areas of policy development, with a particular interest in issues of ethics, socio-economics and inclusion; operational areas related to process improvement, risk analysis, implementation, pilot testing, and training; and management areas including stakeholder engagement and dissemination activities. He has participated in research projects affecting security and surveillance technologies (e.g., biometrics, RFID, intelligent video content analysis), healthcare and assistive technologies for the elderly and disabled (e.g., lifestyle monitoring, cognitive support systems), and emerging technologies and applications (e.g., ubiquitous computing, robotics, biotechnology).

With respect to security-related policy and technology issues, Mr. Wadhwa has provided consultative services to the European Commission, the UK Technology Strategy Board, NATO, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the US Department of Homeland Security and the UK Home Office. He holds a Master of Business Administration from New York University, and a Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Arts from Stevens Institute of Technology.

 

Research Networks and Activity:

  • RISE:  Rising pan-European and International Awareness of Biometrics and Security Ethics, DG Research, FP7, SP-4 Capacities, agreement: 230389.  RISE is a 36-month Coordination and Support Action (CSA) which aims to promote pan-European and international awareness on ethical aspects of biometrics and security technologies. RISE’s framing point is the new political landscape created by the Treaty of Lisbon of the European Union.
  • SAPIENT:  Supporting fundamentAl rights, PrIvacy and Ethics in surveillaNce Technologies, FP7-SEC-2010.6.5-2, (beginning January 2011). SAPIENT is a 36-month Collaborative Project which aims to specify how and when smart surveillance should be used (or not) and its characteristics to be effective and scalable to rapidly adapt to changing situations.
  • ASPIS:  A Secure Platform for IPTV Systems, UK Technology Strategy Board, Eurostars Programme (E! 4823). GSI also engages in the development of new technologies in the security and surveillance arena, providing insights to development teams as to the impacts of technologies on users and others in terms of ethics, privacy, and socio-economic issues. ASPIS is a 24-month project which serves as an example of this type of work, as it aims to develop a secure approach for bi-directional communication via IPTV.
